Cricket World Cup final LIVE updates: Australia take on India in decider

Bumrah has delivered a magical opening spell, and now has Steve Smith (4 off 9) to his credit, leaving Australia at 3-47.

Smith had been in good touch, but a slower delivery which cut back and trapped him lbw ended his stay. Smith should have reviewed the decision, for it would have been reversed, for he was hit outside the line of off stump, as replays later proved.

The pressure is on Australia with the bat, but it wasn’t long ago that the same was said about India, particularly when Pat Cummins delivered this.

Cummins had a fine afternoon in the field.

While Shami has struggled for accuracy with the new ball, Bumrah, at times, has been unplayable, and deserved the wicket of Mitch Marsh, who lashed at a delivery banged in short of a length and tickled an edge behind. For Marsh, it was a case of if you live by the sword, there can be no regrets if you die by that same sword.

Bumrah, conceding three runs an over through the tournament, conceded 15 off his first over. Travis Head was the man who inflicted most of the damage, with two punching boundaries through extra cover.

However, Warner fell in the next over, when he chased at a wide delivery from Mohammed Shami – from around the wicket to the left-hander – and was caught behind. Shami, with 24 wickets, is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament.

The ball is hooping about, but Mitch Marsh and Head are maintaining an aggressive disposition.

David Warner will take the first delivery, with pace ace Jasprit Bumrah given the new ball. And Warner is given a life – a thick edge from a swinging delivery spearing between first and second slips.

It seems unfathomable that India were bowled out for 240 in 50 overs, after skipper Rohit Sharma had helped his team muscle its way to 50 in the seventh over. Virat Kohli also threatened to take the game away from the visitors, but Pat Cummins and his men had other ideas.

Cummins’ clever use of his bowlers, an excellent game plan built around slow, short-pitched deliveries from the quicks, and superb fielding and catching – Travis Head take a bow -ensured the Australians are well-placed to claim a record sixth World Cup.

Mitchell Starc (3-55), Josh Hazlewood (2-60) and Cummins (2-34) were superb, while Glenn Maxwell dismissed the threatening Sharma.
