Fans flock to Collingwood’s training base

The crowd of Collingwood fans at Olympic Park are gathering in front of the function area, anticipating the arrival of the players from the MCG nearby.
There’s no indication when that will be — there’s a fair bit of celebrating that goes on in the rooms after the game.
Best of ground today, in my opinion, is the weather — it’s shorts and T-shirts after 8pm.

‘They manage the minutes better than anyone I’ve seen’: McRae

Craig McRae has spoken post-match following his side’s premiership win, on…
Summing up the premiership win: “Two years of good habits and acting like winners every day and trying to improve ourselves. Not standing in what we’re trying to do, and in the end, it was an incredible management of moments. That’s probably the storyline for this team. They know how to manage minutes better than anyone I’ve ever seen in the game.”
Finding more scoring power: “Clearly we moved the ball differently; that was the whole theme of the week, let’s not do what we did the week before [against the Giants]. We didn’t look to change the angles, didn’t look to bring the ball into the corridor, didn’t look to switch off turnovers. We knew what to fix. Then we train it and reinforce it and we get the benefit.”

The poise of Pendlebury and Sidebottom: “You can’t buy experience on grand final day. Those two in particular have been remarkable for our group. They both did PBs during the week. ‘Pendles’ has done three PBs in the gym three weeks in a row. Talk about getting better every day. He’s na incredible role model for the rest of us.”
Nathan Murphy’s early substitution: “There’s always a story grand final day. What about Tay? What about Dan McStay? What about Johnny Noble? We’re not here without those guys. The game doesn’t recognise [them] but we do.”

Fence pushed over at Olympic Park live site

There’s a bit of argy bargy at the Collingwood live site at Olympic Park.
A lot of Pies fans have made their way there after the game to celebrate.
But the event was ticketed during the game for licensing reasons and security are now turning latecomers away, which is not making people happy.
A fence just got pushed over and people spilled in to the ground, where thousands of people are already partying.

Cancer survivor becomes a Norm Smith medallist

Bobby Hill spent Saturday morning watching highlights of Cyril Rioli win his Norm Smith Medal. He then went out onto the MCG in front of 100,024 people and nervelessly imitated his idol.
“It’s unbelievable … when we got the trade done we thought maybe play finals but to top it off and win the premiership is unbelievable,” he said.

The indelible memory of Collingwood’s last premiership in 2010 was the smother of the century by Heath Shaw when he snuck up on Nick Riewoldt like a librarian, as Dennis Cometti perfectly described it.
Hill delivered the moment of this grand final. It might have even been mark of the year if they counted grand finals.

Magpies return to ground for more celebrations

The Collingwood players and staff have made their way back out onto the field to soak back in the moment.
They sit and hug and cheer among the confete. They have sat the premiership flag in the centre square and are gathering around it.
Notably, Mason Cox still has the USA flag draped around his neck.

Fans that hung around – presumably at functions at the MCG – have ventured down to the bottom level of the ‘G to sing to their heroes.
Security guards have followed and stand around them.

Daicos boys embrace parents after historic win
Thirty-three years after Peter Daicos won the 1990 premiership with Collingwood, his sons Nick and Josh Daicos have added to the family legacy.
The boys were quick to find Peter and mum Colleen after the final siren, both playing their part in the four-point win, in a video published to Collingwood’s social media pages.
Nick was the most prolific player on the ground with 29 disposals, 11 contested possessions, eight score involvements and a goal, while Josh had 17 disposals and 468 metres gained.

It’s a carnival atmosphere at Collingwood’s training ground, where thousands of people are in delirium after watching the Magpies win the premiership.
The bars are heaving, kids are kicking footies and a drummer is playing Jordan De Goey chants.

The post-match coverage is still playing on the big screen and there’s a sense that the fans will be waiting for an in-person appearance from their heroes at some point tonight.

Neale inconsolable in rooms

Just days after winning his second Brownlow Medal, Lachie Neale was in the Lions rooms after losing the grand final, sobbing in his wife’s arms.
Individual honours don’t mean much at this point.
Neale had 21 touches (nine kicks and 12 handballs), took six marks and laid three tackles. But his team didn’t get the win, and he is clearly devastated.

Murphy ruled himself out

Collingwood defender Nathan Murphy has revealed to this masthead that he ruled himself out of the game after taking a heavy hit in the first term.
He said he had blurry vision, which has happened to him with previous concussions, so he ruled himself out.
